Bio

Dr. Vilma Vega is a board-certified infectious disease physician and certified HIV specialist. She has served in various leadership roles including the Chief Medical Officer for CAN Community Health in Florida and Medical Director of the Clearwater and New Port Richey clinics. Dr. Vega joined Infectious Disease Associates in Sarasota, Florida in 1995 and is the previous clinical research director for the Infectious Disease Associates Center for Clinical Studies.

Dr. Vega has been involved in clinical research trials for almost 30 years. Over the years, she has served on several pharmaceutical advisory boards, consulting committees, and speakers bureaus, and presently works as a Regional Medical Director for ViiV Healthcare/GSK pharmaceuticals. She also continues to serve in a local nonprofit clinic which serves people living with HIV.

Dr. Vega is an internationally-known sought-after speaker on various subjects, including infectious diseases, HIV/AIDS, primary care, health and wellness subjects, and global missions. Dr. Vega has made keynote speeches in the United States, as well as in ten countries throughout Africa, Asia, and Latin America. She is frequently requested by national, regional, and faith-based media for expert commentary on medical news in the United States and around the world. In November, 2015, she was highlighted in the Tampa Bay Medical News, and is often interviewed by WWSB ABC 7 as a medical expert.

Dr. Vega received her medical degree from the University of Illinois and completed her infectious disease residency and fellowship at Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami. She has served as a preceptor for various university medical programs in Florida.

She is a member of several professional organizations, including Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the American Academy of HIV Medicine.

Dr. Vega is president of Vega Consulting, LLC, which provides medical and motivational speaking. She is CEO/President of Transition MD, which provides support to physicians in transition, in the midst of Healthcare Reform.

A native of Peru and fluent in Spanish, Dr. Vega felt a call to missions since childhood. Her experience during her first mission trip in 2005 led her to co-found Hearts Afire Inc. in 2006. The Sarasota-based non-profit organization sends doctors, nurses, ministers, and others on short-term humanitarian medical mission trips to Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
